It is truly a privilege to live on this beautiful island. The rugged nature offers beautiful scenery all year round. Summer is something special when the island really comes alive, cozy little places open up, the sun shines and our beautiful beaches are filled with people on summer vacation.
I have visited some of my favorite places on Öland.
As a garden photographer, I love beautiful gardens and like to go on garden visits even when I am free.
In cozy Mörbylånga church village there is Mirabellgården with a fantastic garden. There is a nice pergola with seating surrounded by wonderfully fragrant herbs. The beautiful greenhouse is truly a jewel in the garden. Marianne and Lars also sell fine terracotta pots from Tuscany and other garden tools and decorations.
I love beautiful ceramics and on Öland there are plenty of talented potters with cozy workshops. In Resmo, Karin & Ulf have run their workshop in the yellow corner house for many years. Here you can often see them turning as the workshop is directly adjacent to the store.
They make everything from beautiful mugs to pots in terracotta. I am very weak for the beautiful vases and candlesticks. There is so much nice to take away from here.
At Jeanette, Ateljé himlavid, in picturesque Bläsinge on the east side of the island, you will find a lovely grandmother's garden with many perennials and roses. At the nice Ölandsgården, the chickens run around in the garden and there are many beautiful places to sit down and enjoy. Jeanette is also a fantastic artist and paints beautiful motifs in both watercolor and oil inspired by Öland's animals, nature and the garden. There is also the opportunity to have a coffee in her fine café in one of the barns.
In Glöminge we made a stop at Alsén's ceramics. Another fantastic potter. Anders spins wonderful Marchall globes for the garden, but also smaller lanterns and candlesticks for both indoor and outdoor use. Their decorative flowers are immensely popular and now come in a multitude of colors and shapes. Anders has also made many novelties such as lovely bowls and knobs for the wall in ceramics. As much as you want to take home.
We took the trip north to Föra, just outside the community is Edin's garden. A wonderful garden with beautiful paving and beautiful flower beds. Here the landscape is more barren, but Per and Lena have still managed to create a lovely oasis with many trees and cozy seating. Here there are flamboyant roses and fragrant lavender that look beautiful against the Öland stone. Per has a fine carpentry shop on the farm and Lena makes beautiful ceramics which can be found in the barn in the middle of the garden.
We ended our island tour with a visit to Kårehamn's fish down in the harbor. We like to visit this cozy restaurant when we are out and about on the island. Fantastic food and cozy environment, in good weather there is a place to sit outside right by the water. Our children chose meatballs and hamburgers, which they happily devoured. We enjoyed delicious seafood, which the children also greatly appreciated.
