Saturday 19 August 2023

Ironman means folk festival in Kalmar and Öland. Take part in it too on August 19, 2023. The official IronMan competition takes place on August 19 and involves the participants starting by swimming 3,8 kilometers in the Kalmar Sound, then they cycle 180 kilometers on both streets and country roads, for large parts on Öland to finally finish by running a marathon, which is 42,2 km long. The start and finish takes place in the center of Kalmar, where the atmosphere is always at its best! Along the entire course, residents of Kalmar, islanders and visitors cheer on the fantastic heroes who complete the race. Did you know that large parts of cycling take place in southern Öland?

tips on good audience places!

Be there already early in the morning at the swimming start. The starting area at Tullhamnen is full of both competitors and spectators. After the start, go over to Vågbrytarbadet, Ängöbron or stand by the shoreline along the canal to get a close-up view of the participants tackling the swimming course. You can also see well at the transition area, where the athletes change from swimming to cycling and from cycling to running.

The cycle track offers plenty of good spectator spots along the 180 km long course. You can see the participants on two occasions when they pass the liquid station in Färjestaden, when they are on their way out to Öland or on their way back to the mainland. Or join the crowd at the famous roundabout in the center of Kalmar before the competitors cycle out onto the loop on the mainland. Here below we advise on some stopping times and locations on the island.

Tips for places along the bike path:
at 08.00 - 15.00: Ferry Town (Öland's Market City and harbor plan)
at 08.00 - 15.00: Runsbäck curve
at 08.30 - 11.00: Mörbylånga (square and sports field)
at 09.00 - 12.00: Degerhamn (hill up to route 136)
at 09.30 - 13.00: Hulterstad
at 10.00 - 14.00: Resmo/Gynge (Gynge bygata)
at 11.00 - 15.00: Läckeby (Snättebrovägen)
at 11.00 - 16.00: Rockneby (church)
at 11.00 - 16.30: Lindsdal (Folkets hus)

Kalmar center is the right place for the audience to be during the run. Take a seat at one of the restaurants or get a good view of the course along Kalmar's shopping streets. It's definitely a must!

the finish line

Don't miss the finish line as Stortorget in Kalmar turns into a giant disco under the evening sky. Together, the participants help fulfill their dreams. We cheer the last participants on "the Magic carpet" to finally call them IRONMAN!
