Vickleby elves - classic orchid grounds

At Vickleby alvar you can experience Öland's orchid splendor in May. A few kilometers out on Vickleby alvar is the strange Resmo zone, a heavily water-bearing fracture zone that opens into Resmo källa, today the entire Mörbylånga water source.

At Vickleby alvar there is both what is typical and what is special about Stora Alvaret's flora. In the central and eastern parts, extensive gravel valleys dominate. in the west, but also around Alvarsjön and adjacent to the Resmozone there are well-developed flowering drylands. Most of the phytogeographically interesting species occur in the area, e.g. woolly buttercup, Öland's solvände, mountain crab, soapwort and mountain carnation. Examples of rare species are rock onion, creeping sedge, alvarwort, alvarstand and purple violet

Animal life is also representative of Stora Alvaret. Character birds are song lark, heather piping plover, and stone plover. Meadowlark looking for food in the area. Of insects, we can mention the rose-winged grasshopper and the peculiar alvar caterpillar beetle, as well as the butterflies mountain crab moth, small spinner and ochre-yellow carnation fly.

On Vickleby alvar there are traces of old roads, shepherd's huts, hake, house foundations and graves, e.g. The altar stone with associated ship setting. Life used to be very poor in the small cottages at the edge of the river. The small buildings at Vickleby alvargata are built of masonry limestone or timbered oak planks. The cottages are typical of ore settlements built outside the villages.
