Hiking trails - Alböke parish
Just north of Borgholm by Ormöga there are four hiking trails to choose from. A coastal walk, an elven walk, a village walk and a walk in the bird fields. None of the trails exceed 10 km.
The hiking trails start from the petrol station in Ormöga.
1. Alböke elves 6,5 km
Along this walk in May you can see and hear tufted whip, lark, barn owl, magpie and heather piper (alvargrimma). May viva and hop flowers grow here and where it is more humid there is cable oak. On slightly higher and drier parts clover,
almond blossom and goat's weed Of orchids there are the purple St. Per's keys, the meadow keys and then Adam and Eve. At the country castle, you can see the true Öland solstice together with the blue mountain shrike, the field sparrow and the field woodpecker. At Trinnhorvan you pass the 20 m long dockyard. A large sea warrior from the Bronze Age is said to be buried there (according to E Lundkvist).
2. Coastal walk 7,6 km / 9,3 km
Here you can choose to cycle, but if you want to study this special geological area, you have to walk after the beach. The seawall consists of limestone, alum shale, clay shale and sandstone.
The limestone was formed 488 million years ago when there was a tropical climate and there were many organisms with calcareous shells that were transformed into limestone. Ancylus and Litorinavallen are two seawalls that run along the coast of Öland. Of these, the Litorina valley stands out particularly clearly along the coast at Bruddesta. It marks the highest level the Litorina Sea had 6000 years ago. The boathouses in the old fishing village of Bruddesta are protected as architectural monuments and are managed with the help of the Alböke community association. Here there is a lime kiln that was built in 1910. It was fired with the help of alum slate from the beach embankment.
3. Hiking in a bird area 7 km
This trail passes what is usually called Gillsby bogs, which consist of Bärsmossen in the far north, the larger Norra mossen, and the small Stenkärret in the southwest. The area is protected by the county government through Natura 2000. The wetlands bring a rich bird life where greylag geese and snipe are characteristic species during the spring, while nesting cranes are seen from early spring to late autumn. Bald eagles often hunt in the area and both brown harriers and meadow hawks breed. Elves and moist meadows are rich in orchids where several species are numerous. Flyflowers are most easily found where the trail reaches the wetlands in the northeast. Here you can choose to walk through the protected area and the trail then passes over 5 shacks.
4. Village walk 6.7 km
Hiking trail four goes through Alböke village. It is also suitable for cycling. One of the parish's approximately ten remaining windmills is passed before reaching the center of the village. The church was completed in 1862 and replaced a medieval stone church from the 1100th century. There is a baptismal font from the early 1200th century. In the year of emergency in 1867, which hit Alböke hard, the parish had 848 inhabitants compared to today's approx. 250.
Within Alböke parish there are ancient remains dating back to the Bronze Age. A bronze statuette from the Late Roman Iron Age or Migration Period was found at the beginning of the 1900th century. The statuette is now at the Historiska museum in Stockholm. In connection with the construction of the wind turbines at Stora Istad, new ancient remains have been found. These have not been excavated yet. After the church on the way to Stora Istad, the Öland railway is passed twice. It was put into operation in 1906 and was closed down. 1961.
