Join Malin Björkholm and her family on an excursion to the nature reserve in Penåsa, where they were met by a sea of bluegills! Also stopped at the candle foundry Stickburn in Kastlösa and ended the excursion with pizza Stora Frögården.
Excursion to Penåsa & Kastlösa
We drove south towards Kastlösa and started our excursion at Penåsa nature reserve. Here we were greeted by a nice parking lot with a toilet, which is always appreciated when you travel with children. We took the road through the forest, and here the blue sea appeared inside the forest. Blueberry season is really lovely on Öland and they thrive in our dry and barren soil. You don't often see so many in the same place, absolutely magical. The ivy wound up on tree trunks creating a lovely green backdrop despite the early season and chilly air.
We stopped at the nice rest area, here there was both an outhouse and air for the cycling enthusiast. Sweden trail runs here and there are excellent cycle paths through the forest. The rest area had three shelters with seats and a barbecue area on each, very luxurious not to have to take turns with other excursionists. There was empty wood to fire with. Through the forest you come to a deserted village that was here at the end of the 1700th century to the middle of the 1800th century. The foundations remain and it is interesting to think that these farms were located here in the middle of nowhere. We made a fire and grilled marshmallows, so easy and cozy.
In Kastlösa, only a stone's throw from Penåsa, we visited the candle foundry Stickburn. Charlotte showed how she pours the candles and the children were fascinated by the beautiful colored candles.
The factory store is only open on selected occasions, but outside there is a container that is open every day for self-service. Here you can easily buy your candles and swipe the payment. I love solutions like this, which can be found everywhere on the island.
We ended our excursion with a good dinner at Stora Frö farm. In a cozy environment, fantastic pizzas are prepared here in their wood-fired oven. We were treated to a lovely reception and excellent service.
