Triberga Castle

Triberga Castle

Triberga castle is located just west of the village and the marsh Triberga, which is named by Ancylusvallen.

The structure of the castle

The castle is relatively small with an inner diameter of 60 metres, while the outer diameter amounts to around 110 metres. The castle also has an outer wall, today a low turfed rampart with a width of five meters. The height of the wall is just over two meters, originally about four to five meters. The width varies between six and nine meters, but should have been around five meters from the start. The opening faces east-southeast, towards the country castle and in the direction where the settlement was probably located. A partially filled depression within the castle is probably the remains of a well.

Location and use

The construction of the castle is usually compared to Eketorp's castle, and it is likely that Triberga castle was also used at the beginning of the Middle Ages. The fort is also usually associated with trade and communication, as it is located on an old stretch of road. This "ancient road", which is partly paved, but not followed in its entirety, starts at the Triberga location and leads across Stora Alvaret towards Resmo church, on the west side. There is information that the road continued to Fröbygårda, a former important market place down by Kalmarsund. There are also road lines towards Risinge harbour, Bredinge and Tingstad tiles.

Save

In addition to the ancient castle, there are also a series of graves out in the alvaret. Particularly outstanding is a 350-metre-long stretch with 11 stone placements and a burial ground. There is also a larger cairn with a brim 31 meters in diameter and 1,5 meters high. Within Triberga's alvar lands, remains of twelve watchmen's huts, ten older road sections, five boundary markers or hake, a stone bridge, a sacrificial throw have been found in addition to the "traditional" prehistoric remains. Many ancient remains connect to the road sections, indicating that they may be prehistoric.
