Ottenby bird station

Ringing, exhibitions and Sweden's highest lighthouse! Ottenby bird station: Book a guided tour and join in on ringing or Ottenbymorgon! A fantastic opportunity to learn more about birds and bird research! We show birds in the hand, how ringing is done and how traps and trapping devices work.

We tell you about the activities and the research results that have been achieved. Did you know e.g. that 15.000-25.000 birds are caught here annually, that through the capture we can follow variations in the size of the bird populations and that the spring birds arrive earlier and earlier? Rediscovery of ringed birds gives us knowledge about where and how our birds move, how old they get and much more. The guided tour takes about 40 minutes and can be booked between 10.00 and 16.00. Price SEK 65/adult, SEK 45/child (under 16). Minimum amount SEK 350.

Ottenby morning:
An Ottenby morning starts at the Ottenby bird station where you get to follow along for just over an hour as the birds are caught and see how the ringing is done. It will be an opportunity to see birds really close up in the ringing lab!
Afterwards, breakfast is served at the cape's fine restaurant Fågel Blå and after that, a guided tour with the Ottenby nature center begins of the lighthouse village's history and the search for seals and the cape's resting birds. The morning ends with an opportunity to climb Långe Jan - Sweden's highest lighthouse!

Would you like to support the work of the bird station and at the same time have a memorable experience? Then book our Ottenbymorgon!
There are still several days available in October and bookings can be made on our website under guided tours-> book a guided tour

Naturum Ottenby:
Udden's visitor and information centre, right next to Långe Jan. Here you will learn more about the animals, plants, geology and cultural history that shaped the area before you head out to discover on your own. In addition, we offer a number of program items, guided tours and events. You can also get tips on excursion destinations and hikes. Free entrance.

Long Jan:
The Långe Jan lighthouse was lit for the first time on the first of November 1785 after a construction period of almost two years. The lighthouse was then 60 cubits high (about 36 meters) with a diameter of about 12 meters and with 197 steps up to the top. Långe Jan is today 41,6 meters and Sweden's tallest lighthouse. The view from the top is magnificent. The lighthouse is open during spring, summer and autumn at the same times as the nature center.
