The Öland Bridge
Öland's bridge is free of charge. It is impossible to welcome someone to Öland without mentioning the bridge. Ölandsbron is a concept both as a work of art and a traffic solution.
The six kilometer long bridge is not only a beauty experience. Öland's bridge is also a sensual preparation for "the different country" where there are opportunities for recreation, entertainment and nature experiences.
The plan for a fixed connection, between Öland and the mainland, has existed for a long time and led to several parliamentary motions and investigations.
The first concrete proposal was presented in 1932. However, it was not until November 18, 1966 that the government established a plan for the construction of large bridges, and this plan included the Öland Bridge.
The first sod was broken by then Minister of Communications Svante Lundkvist on December 30, 1967.
The bridge could be inaugurated on 30 September 1972 and was until 1998 Europe's longest bridge. The bridge is 6 meters long and has a clear height of 072 meters and a clear bridge width of 36 meters.
Highest height is 41,69 meters, lowest height is 6,65 meters. The bridge is built of reinforced concrete in 155 spans, of which the high bridge section in 6 spans with a span of 130 meters. The bridge is Sweden's longest bridge, if you count the parts of the bridge that are on Swedish territory.
The Öresund Bridge, which is longer in total, does not have its entire length in Sweden, but the part of the Öresund Bridge that is in Sweden is shorter than the Öland Bridge. The road that goes over the bridge is county road 137, which connects to E22 on the mainland and county road 136 on Öland.
