Öland's Södra Ude
Öland's southern cape is something out of the ordinary. The road down to Långe Jan, which is surrounded by the beautiful landscape, is perhaps the most spectacular on Öland. For parts of the year, the roads are lined with grazing cows and sheep who don't care about the passing cars. Sometimes you have to wait beautifully while a family of sheep slowly crosses the road.
At the southern tip of Öland, which is one of Sweden's best birding areas, is the nature reserve Ottenby. During the so-called birdwatching weeks, v. 20-22 and 40-42, bird watchers from all over the world crowd Öland's southern cape to watch the migratory birds that arrive or leave the country.
THE SCHEFERIAN MEADOWS
When you walk across the Schäferi meadows, you might think you've arrived on the African savannah. It is one of Northern Europe's largest hay meadows and also consists of extensive pastures with interesting geological formations (banks). The name Schäferiängarna comes from an old German word for an area where sheep were kept. The Schäfer meadows are off-limits during spring and summer until 1/9. But you can always walk along the marked path, the Ängsvaktarstigen leads from the grove to a viewpoint near the beach. There are more nice hiking opportunities adapted to accessibility in the area.
LIGHTHOUSE
At the lighthouse village, next to the lighthouse, there is a bookshop and a small lighthouse museum housed in the Värmestugan. At the lighthouse site there is also a restaurant and the Ottenby bird station, which is run by BirdLife Sweden. Harbor seals and suns often lie on the rocks outside the eastern shore.
NATURUM OTTENBY
A Naturum is a center for visitors to a natural area. Naturum Ottenby is located in the middle of the lighthouse village. There is free entry to the interesting exhibition on migratory birds, and is open annually from Easter to November. Naturum also offers many guided tours for visitors.
LONG JAN
Långe Jan, which was lit for the first time in 1785, is one of Sweden's oldest lighthouses. With its 42 meters, it is absolutely Sweden's tallest lighthouse. The name Långe Jan comes from the medieval chapel St. Johannes (Jan). When the Chapel was demolished, the stone was used to build the lighthouse. A stone cross west of the road between Långe Jan and Ottenby kungsgård marks the site of the former chapel.
