Night scouting for water salamanders in Midland

Join us on an exciting journey of discovery to the pond where we find long-legged frogs, newts and a lot of other species that thrive here.

Day scouting
Join nature guide Caroline on an easy hike through the forest. We look for tracks from different animals and learn to recognize trees without leaves. If we're really lucky, the salamander has woken up and is now preparing the spring party in Stillhetens damm. With the help of the experienced guide, you will learn to see the fascinating animals. Once you see the first one, you see more and more of life beneath the surface. Hear about newts, newts' lives and habitats. Learn what Sweden's two different species look like, and how to distinguish male from female.

The day patrol takes 1,5 hours and costs SEK 95 per person

Date:
April 17 at 10.00-11.30
April 20 at 10.00-11.30
April 21 at 10.00-11.30
April 24 at 10.00-11.30

Night patrol
Want to make the experience even more adventurous? Join Caroline on a hike along the path with a headlamp. In the dark, the sounds are amplified and you experience Mittlandsskogen in a different way than during the day. Maybe we hear the hooting of owls. And if we're really, really lucky, we might see salamanders on their spring migration.

After the hike, we gather by the fire where you are offered something hot to drink and a freshly baked waffle. So bring your own mug and preferably something to sit on.

The night walk takes 2 hours and costs SEK 250 per person.

Date:
April 17 at 20.00-22.00
April 20 at 20.00-22.00
April 21 at 20.00-22.00

Practice
Regardless of whether you choose guiding during the day or in the evening, we gather at Mittlandsgården, Törnbottenvägen 68, just outside Algutsrum. From there we go to the forest together. We recommend warm clothes. Feel free to choose layers upon layers with cover-up trousers in case of rain and wind. On the feet, warm shoes/boots that can withstand getting wet. The ground is flat but somewhat uneven, therefore it does not work with a pram/walker. Dogs are welcome if it is OK with the other participants.

"We took part in a super lovely headlamp hike with Caroline as a committed and knowledgeable guide. Fascinating how much life there is in nature already in February. This tour was so captivating that we only managed to snap a single photo. Definitely worth a trip here, we have already booked the next trip with Caroline.” Catherine and Johan
"A really nice trip in the Mittlandsskogen! We had three children with us (10, 7 and 4 years old) and it worked for all three. We learned about nature conservation, trees, insects, frogs and salamanders on the salamander walk. We will return to one of the summer occasions with a sheep safari.” Emmy
"Caroline is a spellbindingly talented nature guide! Wish that everyone could experience a trip in Öland's nature and the different seasons of the Mittlandskogen with her." Ellen
