Mörbylångaleden - Walk in the World Heritage
The Mörbylångaleden is an approximately 80 km long hiking trail that runs through unique natural and cultural environments between Öland's Tourist Office at the bridge and Ottenby hostel in Näsby.
The trail winds through a mosaic of the Öland landscape's different natural types, including the species-rich Mittlandsskogen, which is considered to be Northern Europe's largest contiguous deciduous forest area south of the mountain range. The forest has largely arisen on old grazing and mowing grounds that have been cultivated since the Iron Age. Even today you can see small clearings with interspersed fields, meadows and wetlands. The trail goes largely over Stora Alvaret and then follows the old railway bank. In addition to a nature experience, you also get an art experience here in the form of some sculptures placed in the middle of the vast landscape. The trail passes herbaceous lakelands, goes over sand dunes, along shingle beaches and through villages with very ancient origins.
The hiking trail is divided into five stages and is marked with red wooden arrows. Along the trail there are rest areas with wind protection, toilets of a simpler standard, fireplaces and information boards about Öland's nature, culture and history.
