John C Nelson playground with the pirate ship Barbara
Playground with pirate ship in Borgholm
At the playground you can climb on the ship and look out over the harbor. Here you can also ride slides, swings and much more.
To honor the memory of John C Nelson, “The Swedish Historical Society of Rockford Illinois” has donated money to the playground, which is therefore named after him and the pirate ship after his wife, Barbara Lunde.
The Americans John Clifford Nelson and Barbara Lunde were descendants of Sweden who worked to strengthen the ties between Borgholm and Rockford. John C Nelson, originally from northern Öland, was called “the Swedish king of Rockford”. Over the years, John and Barbara have welcomed and taken care of many islanders and Swedes who visited Rockford. During the late 1800th century and early 1900th century, one in ten islanders emigrated to America. Many islanders settled in the areas around Chicago and Rockford, Illinois in the USA. Since 2002, Rockford has been one of the twin towns of Borgholm Municipality
