Day trip treasures 3. The Stone Coast

What makes an excursion really successful? Do you sometimes feel a little stressed that the holiday feels short and you want to catch up with as much as possible? In addition, everyone in the holiday party should feel satisfied. An equation that is not always easy to solve. No matter what you want to do most of all, we can promise that the excursions we recommend provide memories for life.

Byrum's sea-stacks

Byrum boasts Öland's finest stretch of sea-stacks, consisting of about 100 pieces along a 600-metre shoreline. The largest sea-stacks can be found in the southern part of the area and can be up to 4 meters tall. There is a beautiful sandy beach just north of the sea-stacks.

Horn's costal road & Horn's cape

The road leading from Byrum via Alvedsjö huts and down to Äleklinta is generally known as the Stone Coast. It winds past a number of stone quarries from a former industrial era and provides a superb view over the Kalmar Strait. Stone has been quarried at Horns udde since medieval times.

Horn Lake

Hornsjön is Öland's largest lake and was added by the fact that the land uplift enclosed the bay that originally existed here. The lake is a popular bird place where you can hear reed and marsh warblers. At Klosterholmen there is a bird tower. You can reach the lake from several directions, for example from one of the car parks at Horn's royal estate.

Port of Jordhamn

One of Öland's most beautiful and iconic sights at any time of the year is looking south down onto Jordhamn's scouring mill and small fishing huts. The wind-driven mill was built in 1905 for scouring limestone slabs. This scouring mill is the only one of its kind left in Sweden today. Next to the windmill lies its predecessor, a scouring mill that was driven by oxen.

Alvedsjö Bodar

A small harbor with a number of wooden fishing huts. These are post-and-plank huts with a thatched roof. During the 20th century, this area along the coastal road became the summer residence of many authors and other artists.

Gillberga village & quarry

Almost all buildings in the village of Gillberga are built with limestone. It is understandable that limestone was used as a building material as the local quarry lies just south of the village. The stone quarry's walls are up to 17 meters high and allow you to look 17 million years back in time, because each millimeter of limestone rock took 1,000 years to form.

Sandvik

An old fishing community which for a long time was the center of Öland's stone industry. Today, Sandvik has a lovely marina which makes it a popular tourist destination. Here are restaurants, cafés and a supermarket. Sandvik's windmill is a well-known landmark in the harbor's skyline.
It was built in 1856 and is one of the world's largest windmills.

djupvik - eleklint

The narrow alvarsvägen between Djupvik and Äleklinta winds its way along the crest of the country castle with the alvar and the coast on either side. Just north of Äleklinta is the well-preserved fishing village of Bruddesta. Nearby are also Djupvik and Äleklinta, both of which are old fishing villages with stone beaches all around and today popular excursion destinations with nice bathing spots.

Discover on foot

Around Knisa bog, which offers orchid splendor and a rich bird life, runs a 5 km long hiking trail. The bog is one of the island's few odiket wetlands and is located 400 m west of Knisa village.
