Ironman means folk festival in Kalmar and Öland. Take part in it too on August 17, 2024. The official IronMan competition takes place on August 17 and involves the participants starting by swimming 3,8 kilometers in the Kalmar Sound, then they cycle 180 kilometers on both streets and country roads, for large parts on Öland to finally finish by running a marathon, which is 42,2 km long. The start and finish takes place in the center of Kalmar, where the atmosphere is always at its best! Along the entire course, residents of Kalmar, islanders and visitors cheer on the fantastic heroes who complete the race. Did you know that large parts of cycling take place in southern Öland?

Ironman is a folk festival in Kalmar and on Öland. The official Ironman competition is held on August 19 and you can be a part of the festival as well. The competitors begin by swimming 3,8 kilometers in the Kalmar Strait, then going by bicycle for 180 kilometers throught city streets and country roads, many of which are on Öland. The competition ends by running a marathon, which is 42,2 km. The start and finish lines are located in Kalmar city center and the atmosphere is amazing! Throughout the entire route people from Kalmar, Öland, and all around the world are cheering on the great heroes who are competing. Did you know that most of the cycling distance is on the southern part of Öland?

Tips on where to view the competition from!


You can be on location early in the morning just as the swimming portion of the competition begins. The area around the starting line is packed with competitors and spectators alike. After the competition has started you can walk to Vågbrytarbadet, Ängöbron, or along the shoreline along the canal to get a close up of the competitors swimming. Another great place to watch is where the competitors change from swimming to bicycling, or from bicycling to running.  


The bike lane offers lots of places to watch the competition from along the 180 km long route. You can see the competitors when they pass the water station in Färjestaden, twice. Both when they are on their way to Öland, and on their way back to the mainland. Or you can be a part of the great sea of ​​people in the famous roundabout in Kalmar city centre. at 11.00 - 15.00: Läckeby (Snättebrovägen) 
at 11.00 - 16.00: Rockneby (The church) 
at 11.00 - 16.30: Lindsdal (Folkets hus) 


Kalmar city center is the right location for spectators to watch during the running portion of the competition. Stand by one of the restaurants or get a great overview of the trek along the shopping streets. If you want to experience something different you should go along the track northbound to participate in the crazy, fun party on Neptunivägen. It is a must!

The finishing line

Stortorget in Kalmar is transformed into a giant disco under the evening sky. Make sure to be there! Everyone cheers the competitors on as they run the final stretch on the Magic carpet. Finally, we can name them IRONMAN!

The world's greatest bicycle route!

IronMan Kalmar is described as the most recommended Ironman race in Europe, putting Öland's unique scenery on the world map. In 2019 the bike route received the award for "The world's greatest cycle route" by Athletes' Choice Awards. That same year Ironman Kalmar received a number of awards; "The world's most recommended Ironman race", "The world's third greatest Ironman event", The world's greatest running route", and "the world's second best host city". To put it simply, a Worldclass Ironman Race.

Ölandsleden and Ölandsbron are open throughout the competition

The bridge has one lane in each direction open to car traffic and a maximum reduced speed of 50 km/h. On Öland, there is very limited access in Färjestaden and to the south. Road 136 is open throughout the competition for southbound travel.
