Eketorps Castle

Welcome to Eketorp's castle! Eketorp's castle is a completely excavated ancient castle where the wall and houses have been recreated directly on the ancient remains. If you are interested in nature and culture, you will get your fill of the castle's interesting history, archeology and fauna at Alvaret.

IRON AGE
The first castle, Eketorps I, was built in the fourth century during a period of prosperity on Öland. To defend their possessions, about 300 households joined together and built the bail. It became a common gathering place and a temporary shelter in times of trouble. Eventually the settlement became permanent under Eketorp II.

MEDIEVAL TIMES
In the early Middle Ages, the castle was used as a military garrison with a cavalry. During this time, more than a hundred houses were accommodated within the ring wall without a single fireplace except in the central kitchen. The castle wall was strengthened and a low outer wall was also built.

GREAT SERIOUSNESS
Eketorp's castle is located on Öland's great plain. The alvaret in southern Öland is the world's largest alvar land and, together with the lake lands, row villages and fields, make up the world heritage of Southern Öland's agricultural landscape.

When Eketorps Borg, together with the museum and shop, is open, guided tours are offered in English and Swedish. Games and activities for the whole family are also offered.
