1. Midland Forest

Welcome to one of Europe's largest contiguous deciduous forest areas, which offers a variety of fine hiking trails and very high natural values. Das Gebiet besteht aus Laubwald, beweidetem Grasland, Ackerland und Feuchtgebieten. Laubwälder machen fast die Hälfte von Midland aus und bestesen principium aus hazelholzreichem Eichenwald, Hainbuchenwald, Eschen und Ulmen. 2. Grey Castle

Gråborg is Öland's largest ancient castle and also one of the largest structures of its kind in Sweden, with an area of 210x160 meters and a wall height of 4–7 meters. The castle was built in the Eisenzeit and served until 1677 in the war against the Danes as a defense system.

3. St. Canut's Chapel

Die St.-Knut-Kapelle, 200 meters north of Gråborg, shows that the castle was of great importance in the Middle Ages. Die Kapelle wurde im 17. Jahrhundert erbaut, aber bereits im 16. Jahrhundert aufgegeben. Heute sind nur noch der westliche Giebel und der Triumphbogen erhalten.

Adjacent to the historical castle and the chapel of Saint Knut, there is a well-equipped picnic area with barbecues, wind protection systems and toilets, making it an excellent place for outings and barbecues throughout the year.

4. Ismantorp Alte Burg

Die Burg Ismantorp is die am besten erhalten antike Burg auf Öland mit ihren 95 Hausfundamenten. The castle has a diameter of 127 meters and a height of 2,5 meters. Die Burg hat neun Tore, was aus verteidigungstechnischer Sicht ein Nachteil sein muss, da Tore die schwächsten Punkte sind. Erklärungen wurden stattdessen in der altnordischen Mythologie gesucht, wo die Zahl neun eine große Rolle spielt. Bei Ausgrabungen wurden nur weinge Funde gemacht, was darauf hindeutet, dass die Burg nie durchwahrt bewohnt war und vielleicht auch nie eine Verteidigungsburg war.

5. Öland Museum, Himmelsberga

Das Dorf Himmelsberga ist ein Doppelreihendorf mit umliegenden Bauernhöfen auf both Straßenseiten. Die Scheunen umschließen den Innenhof, in dem sich das Wohnhaus in einer geschützten Lage im hinteren Bereich befindet. In 1957, the Öland Lokalgeschichtsverein bought two farms to preserve a terraced village for posterity, and created the open-air museum Öland's Museum Himmelsberga. Since then, the Museum has further developed with multiple courtyards, an art gallery, a gallery, a coffee house and a store.

Hiking in the Midland Forest

The 50-kilometer Midland Trail offers picturesque hikes through the Midland of Öland with ancient monuments, villages and rich plant and animal world.

In the Rönnerum–Abbentorp area, there are three orange-marked paths that lead through the protected Mittelwald with Laubbäumen and Hainbuche. Here you pass several of Öland's most important cultural places, such as Odensflisor, the old castle of Ismantorps and the old village of Rönnerum.
