Tastes of Öland

Agriculture and its production have characterized Öland and the islands since time immemorial. The farmers who live and work here take great pride in quality and are constantly interested in development. Various processing projects are ongoing and there is always a great interest in trying new exciting products. It is not entirely easy to cultivate on the whole of Öland, and the stony soil and the proximity to the limestone bedrock sometimes put the farmers to the test. On Öland, potatoes and many other vegetables are grown, large quantities of beans of both traditional varieties but also new ones. The increasing interest in vegetables is noticeable when farmers invest in lentils and Borlotti beans. Onions and berries grow in the wild, and above all Öland is known for its herbs.

Interest in locally produced food is growing and on Öland the producers are keeping up with the trend. Farm shops, joiners, farm dairies and processors take care of raw materials and offer a wide range of high quality. The grazing animals that nibble herbs from the coastal meadows and keep the landscape open are an important part of the agricultural culture on Öland. The herbs get nutrients from the limestone bedrock and the potatoes get their best flavor from sandy soils in the north. In the farm shops you can find cured meat, country milk, cheese, eggs, vegetables and fruit. Examples of Öland food processing and production are wide. Finding an Öland drink to go with your meal is not difficult. Musteries and breweries in micro format can be found on the island and grapes are even grown for wine production.
